What is 泡盛 Awamori? (3)

Awamori tastes nice! My favorite one is 久米仙(Kumesen) so now drinking Kumesen with Ice. No shochu today.
This time let’s think about ‘Name’ of Awamori. It is also related to history in Japan.

Have you ever seen Awamori label carefully ??

In the Awamori label, “Ryukyu Awamori” is displayed in addition to brand name, ingredients, alcohol frequency.
The indication “Ryukyu Awamori” is like a proof that this Awamori was made in Okinawa Prefecture.

Since Awamori was classified as Shochu Otsu-rui after 1972, it wasn’t possible to use the name Awamori for the sake of displaying liquor for a while. However, rather than “Shochu Otsu-rui”, Awamori was called Awamori for a long time, So In 1983, “Awamori” was able to be used as an exception display.
In the same year, only Awamori built in Okinawa was able to display 「本場泡盛」”Awamori in the real place” as well. The Okinawa Prefecture Sake Brewery Association created to respond to the optimization and tightening of the quality indication.

Why did you need such an arrangement?

To tell the truth, in the past, there was a history that Awamori was also made and commercialized outside Okinawa Prefecture.
Legally, as long as we keep the Awamori manufacturing method, it is still possible to manufacture Awamori in another prefecture in Japan.

Therefore, in order to differentiate Awamori from Awamori out of the prefecture and Awamori from Okinawa, an agreement on such display was made.
2004. Awamori manufactured in Okinawa Prefecture is now displayed as “Ryukyu Awamori”.

Vibes Point

Do you know the sweet potato sake?
It is distilled liquor which was different from sweet potato shochu, which was made in Okinawa during the Ryukyu Kingdom period.
During the Ryukyu dynasty, Awamori could only be made in the place called Shuri Sanka.
By regulating the making of Awamori, the government stored rice as food.
Sweet Potato Sake was active at that time.
It was drunk at a ceremonial occasion.
If Awamori was a drink of the upper class, the sweet potato Sake was a common drink.
Unlike now, in the era where sake making was free, there were production facilities for each family, making a liquor was an important job of a housewife.
It seems that it was regarded as important for the evaluation as a wife whether the making of a sweet potato sake making is good.
Such a potato liquor is no longer made after the manufacture of private liquor was banned together with the revision of the liquor tax law in 1898.

Shochu and Awamori , our Japanese alcohol culture really shows each era! Please drink shochu and Awamori with history!
