A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.
Example … BORDEAUX Wine is famous for GI product!
Ok Let’s talkabout Japanese GI shochu in Kyusyu and this time is ‘Kagoshima GI shochu’
Satsuma shochu standards
① All ingredients (Sweet potato and water)are Should be from Kagoshima Prefecture.
② It was produced in Kagoshima Prefecture, distilled by single distillation, and bottled in the prefecture.
※ Kagoshima pref was said ‘Satsuma’ before so we use Satsuma for satuma shochu name.
On May 28, 2007, the “Satsuma Shochu Declaration” was officially announced at the Kagoshima Prefectural Office.
We shochu producers in Kagoshima are proud of the fact that sweet potato shochu, which has been handed down as a part of Satsuma tradition and culture, has been recognized as a Geographical Indication of (Trips) under strict conditions based on the TRIPS “Satsuma” Agreement, which provides for the protection of international intellectual property rights among WTO member countries. Among the world’s liquors, there are wine Bordeaux, champagne, brandy cognac, whiskey scotch, bourbon and so on which are recognized as having geographical indications. As with these global brands, we value the meaning of being able to label them as “Satsuma” and are committed to the following. This will develop “Satsuma shochu” into a distilled liquor loved all over the world.
①We are particular about sweet potatoes produced in Kagoshima and water, and only authentic shochu produced in Kagoshima prefecture is marked with “Satsuma” to prove its quality.
②We will work with local producers to grow safe and high-quality sweet potatoes and further improve the quality of “Satsuma shochu”.
③We are grateful for the Kagoshima climate that has fostered “Satsuma shochu” and will strive to preserve the beautiful and blessed natural environment.
④ we will strive to develop Kagoshima’s rich traditions and culture that surround the “Satsuma shochu”.
⑤We will cooperate with all people involved in “Satsuma shochu” and contribute to the development of local communities.
⑥We will introduce the deliciousness and culture of “Satsuma shochu” to people around the world and promote exchanges.
⑦We will introduce the advantages of “Satsuma shochu” and endeavor to educate people about moderate and healthy drinking practices in light of the special characteristics of sake.
By the way , Kagoshima shochu maker loves their local culture and local products so we have another symbol mark for shochu below .

Contents, Ingredients and Method: Made by using sweet potato produced in Kagoshima Prefecture as the main ingredient, and using koji rice or sweet potato produced in Kagoshima Prefecture, it is distilled by a single distillation machine.
(In a nutshell, locally produced raw materials, reliable manufacturing methods, etc., are displayed as a sign of superior quality and reliability.)

Also distilled in Minamisatsuma(South area of kagoshima pref name) and packaged in containers and containing no additives other than water.
I think most famous Satsuma shochu (famous means most selling in the world ) is 『さつま 白波』
Satsuma – Shiranami shochu.
This shochu is maybe easy to get your countory’s some liquor store.
Strong sweet potato flavor and taste so super good with hot water .
Satsuma-Shiranami has all mark which i intorduced this time (Satsuma shochu , 3E mark ,Nansatsu Mark ).
Nansatsu area is south part of kagoshima prefecture and this area is famous for its large production of sweet potatoes.
So i guess they proud of their’Nansatsu mark’!
